Tax on grieving families

Government Plans to increase probate fees have narrowly been approved following a House of Commons Delegated Legislation Committee vote. The Statutory Instrument will now be put before the House of Commons, where it is likely to be approved.

It is proposed that probate fees will increase from the current flat figure of £215 (or £155 if done by a solicitor) to a sliding scale of fees rising to as much as £6,000 for estates valued at more than £2m.

The actual date of implementation has not yet been confirmed.

Serious concerns have been raised in the industry since the fees bear no correlation with the actual cost of providing the court service.
